Job Purpose:
DELIVERY OF EHSS service to the R&D Tres Cantos site to ensure that delivery of an efficient and effective EHSS service, with consistent standards and processes are adopted and a strong and robust partnership exists with the other services within EHSS.
Main Responsibilities:
- Act as the EH&S advisor for R&D/Commercial in Tres Cantos Site
- Work effectively with other EHS professionals to ensure comprehensive support is provided to the business and that synergies are maximized between team members and good practice is shared between departments.
- Working effectively with other key EHS professionals to deliver an efficient EHS service to business partners, facilities and project management staff
- Provide day to day support as part of the EHSS R&D EU team to deliver first line advice, training, coaching, independent business monitoring, emergency response, risk assessment, incident investigation, input to local projects and processes, as needed.
- Provide specialist technical services (Chemical Safety, Machine Safety, Process Safety, Biological Safety, Driver Safety, Risk Assessment, etc...) to the R&D and BUs. This role provides for direction and advice to enable R&D scientific and Commercial staff to successfully conduct work and remain compliant with local and National EHS regulations and guidelines.

Basic Requirements:
- Relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, biology, engineering).Environment, Health or Safety expertise
- A post-graduate EHS qualification in a relevant discipline.Member of an appropriate EHS professional body. Credentialed in a specific topic area (e.g., CIH)
- Previous experience in EHS-related roles
Technical knowledge & core skills
- Hazard recognition and quantitative risk assessment basics:
- Able to perform COSHH/chemical risk assessments, job safety analyses (JSA/JHA) and use a risk matrix to define controls.
- Familiarity with hierarchy of controls and selection/fit-for-purpose PPE.
- Laboratory and chemical safety:
- Understand SDS interpretation, chemical incompatibilities, storage segregation, flammables management and basic toxicology principles.
- Working knowledge of fume hood/ventilation principles and basic containment controls.
Process and occupational safety:
- Awareness of permit-to-work systems, lockout-tagout (LOTO) basics, confined-space entry controls and hot-work controls.
- Basic process safety concepts (e.g., reactive hazards, exotherms) and participation in HAZID/HAZOP inputs under supervision.
Environmental controls:
- Understand waste classification/segregation, hazardous waste handling, spill containment and reporting; basic emissions and discharge considerations.
- Awareness of relevant environmental permits and reporting obligations.
Incident investigation & data analysis:
- Carry out structured incident/near-miss investigations using root-cause tools (5 Whys, basic RCA), document findings and track corrective actions.
- Basic data handling: incident trend analysis, KPI calculation (LTIFR, near-miss rates), and clear technical reporting using Excel/Power BI or EHS systems.
Audits, compliance & management systems:
- Participate in internal/external EHS audits (ISO 14001/45001 frameworks); prepare evidence and follow up CAPAs to closure.
- Draft and update SOPs, safe systems of work and local safety procedures.
Training & coaching:
- Design and deliver technical safety briefings, lab inductions and toolbox talks; produce concise technical guidance and checklists.
Systems & tools:
- Proficient with MS Excel (pivot tables, basic formulas) and comfortable learning EHS platforms (e.g., EHSOne- examples only).
- Use of incident/event management, action-tracking and permit systems.
