How working as a student in Spain works
Since the May 2025 immigration regulation (RD 1155/2024), students enrolled in higher education or vocational (FP) programs in Spain can work up to 30 hours a week alongside their studies. The work right is built into the student stay — no separate permit, as long as the job doesn’t interfere with your timetable.
It does not cover everyone: language-school students have no automatic right to work.
This page lists the job shapes that fit — internships and part-time roles. Employers hire you like any other candidate; your side is confirming the weekly hours stay inside 30 and that your enrollment qualifies.
Ads don’t always state hours, so this list understates what’s really available — some full-time listings can be negotiated down. When you finish your studies, a 12-month job-search stay and an in-country switch to a work permit follow: see the after-graduation guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I work in Spain on a student visa?
- Yes — if you are enrolled in higher education or a vocational (FP) program, you can work up to 30 hours a week without a separate work permit, under the May 2025 immigration regulation (RD 1155/2024). Language-school students do not have this automatic right.
- Do I need my employer to sponsor me?
- No. Within the 30-hour right, an employer hires you like any other candidate — there is no sponsorship process. That is what makes students some of the easiest non-EU hires in Spain.
- Are internships in Spain paid?
- It varies by contract and sector. Since the May 2025 regulation, every intern in Spain must be enrolled in social security, whether the internship is curricular or extracurricular.
- What happens when I graduate?
- You can stay up to 12 months on a job-search stay, and when you find a role, switch to a work permit in-country — no consulate, no leaving Spain. See our guide to staying in Spain after graduation.
- Why doesn’t this list show every student-suitable job?
- We list roles tagged as internships or part-time. Many ads never state hours, so plenty of suitable roles are missing from the count — and some full-time listings can be adapted if you ask.
