About the role

CIC energiGUNE is seeking a candidate to carry out a PhD within the framework of an MSCA doctoral network, Grant Agreement No. 101311389, funded by the European Commission.

The aim of the project is to evaluate and mitigate the degradation of high-voltage sodium layered oxide cathodes, including instability in the presence of moisture, irreversible phase transitions and parasitic reactions with the electrolyte, through interfacial strategies that improve their electrochemical performance and facilitate their integration into high-voltage sodium-ion batteries, SIBs.

The predoctoral researcher will develop a stable, low-impedance cathode-electrolyte interphase, CEI, to reduce irreversible electrolyte consumption and improve performance during cycling and at different charge and discharge rates. Before battery assembly, ex situ interfacial solutions will be applied using different chemical, mechanical and vapor-phase deposition methods, which will be compared or complemented with in situ CEI modifications through tailored electrolyte formulations or sacrificial salts.

CEI stability and Na⁺ transport will be investigated in depth. A comprehensive characterization of the solid-liquid, S-L, and solid-solid-liquid, S-S-L, interfaces is planned using EIS, XPS and TEM, in collaboration with DC#2. In collaboration with DC#1, anode materials, and DC#15, electrolytes, full cells will be validated. Structure-function relationships of the interfaces will be further assessed using atomistic information from DC#7.
