Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The position is part of the Network Innovation area at Telefónica/CDO. This area is responsible for technological exploration in the fields of IP, optical, microwave, and satellite networks, partially supported by international projects, as well as driving the evolution and transformation of Telefónica's operational networks, both in terms of technology (capabilities, protocols, SDN control planes, network disaggregation) and architecture and planning.

The role requires project-level coordination of workstreams within the scope of Transport networks, specifically in transmission networks (optical and RF) and photonic technologies. This involves working with teams of junior engineers, other experts in the innovation area, and alignment with those responsible for other exploration lines within and outside the organization, as well as representing Telefónica before technological bodies.
The position is expected to participate in the development of the area's innovation plan, align it with the company's plan, and contribute to the awarding of proposals with external funding from European Union public programs, as well as national and regional programs in their field of research.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Tasks within research projects related to connectivity technologies are varied and include:
• Project planning and management, representing Telefónica and acting as the interface with the project consortium
• Development of use cases, requirements, and architectures for the technologies under research in the projects
• Techno-economic studies to establish the viability parameters of the technologies under study, or their positioning relative to other existing market alternatives
• Development of prototypes and PoCs of the technologies under study
• Preparation and execution of test plans
• Experimental validation of technologies and demonstrators
• Preparation and communication of project results. This activity includes various tasks, such as drafting committed deliverable documents, preparing and defending research papers at international conferences and congresses, standardizing the most relevant results, or protecting them via registration or patents when applicable.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

• Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering. Level: Master's.
• A Master's degree or Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences is also valid, although in this case, it depends on professional experience.
• Preferably PhD level or ongoing doctoral studies in technological fields related to networks and devices.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in R&D environments for advanced networks, preferably in laboratories or telecommunications operators.
• Proven technical and documentary experience in subsidized European projects (e.g., participation in SNS calls, Horizon Europe, CELTIC-NEXT, 5G Public-Private Partnerships, etc.).
• High level of English, with international experience/ability to interact in European forums being valued.
• Skills in technical documentation, report preparation, transversal leadership, consortium management, and WP coordination.
• Ability to understand transport network architectures and technologies, both in the data plane and the control plane.
• Knowledge of the transmission physical layer, primarily in optical networks, but RF is also recommended.
• Knowledge of fixed and mobile access and transport communication networks and the evolution of these technologies.
• Skills in data engineering associated with network protocols in control, management, and data planes, as well as existing tools and technologies for the collection, selection, and transformation of these. Understanding of different Machine Learning techniques for manipulating and generating useful information in network data management and analysis and evaluating their effectiveness.
• Knowledge of project, activity, and work team management, preferably in an international context.
• Desirable knowledge of the IP switching protocol stack, SDN/NFV architectures.
• Desirable knowledge of Traffic Engineering - Transport: Ability to analyze and characterize different types of traffic and their relationship with different network topologies.
• Knowledge of the operation of Transport standardization bodies for the control and data plane (IETF, ONF, OIF, ETSI, BBF, TIP, etc.). Ability to understand standards and defend standardization proposals in the field of transport technologies.
• Desirable knowledge of other network segments, such as routing architectures and IP layer switching HW.
