Researcher - Applied AI for Telco Networks and Systems

Telefónica's research area focuses on developing advanced solutions based on artificial intelligence applied to next-generation telecommunications networks (evolved 5G and 6G). Within the Innovation Lab, the Scientific Research group works on building the scientific knowledge that will enable the evolution of future networks, integrating AI, cloud, and edge computing into large-scale telecommunications systems.

The team investigates how to design more autonomous, intelligent, and efficient networks through machine learning techniques, massive data analysis, and systems optimization, with the goal of improving performance, reliability, and automation of network infrastructures.

What will your mission be? 🎯

The mission of the area is to drive the transformation of telecommunications networks toward autonomous, intelligent systems natively powered by artificial intelligence. Through applied research, the goal is to develop models and architectures that optimize network performance, improve anomaly detection, and enable new digital services.

Additionally, the area aims to connect scientific research with real product impact, facilitating the transfer of technology to deployed systems that serve millions of users worldwide.

How will you contribute to the purpose of the role with your skills? 💼

Conduct original research in artificial intelligence applied to telecommunications networks.

• Design machine learning models for network optimization, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis.
• Work with large volumes of network data (KPIs, signaling, user behavior).
• Develop complete data pipelines: processing, feature engineering, training, and model evaluation.
• Research and integrate AI into network architectures (NFV, cloud-native, network management platforms).
• Publish results in high-level scientific conferences and journals.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to transfer research results into real systems.
• Participate in European projects, international consortia, and standardization activities.
• Contribute to patents, white papers, and the scientific dissemination of research.

La misión del área es impulsar la transformación de las redes de telecomunicaciones hacia sistemas autónomos, inteligentes y nativamente impulsados por inteligencia artificial. A través de la investigación aplicada, se busca desarrollar modelos y arquitecturas que permitan optimizar el rendimiento de red, mejorar la detección de anomalías y habilitar nuevos servicios digitales.

Asimismo, el área tiene como objetivo conectar la investigación científica con el impacto real en producto, facilitando la transferencia tecnológica hacia sistemas desplegados que dan servicio a millones de usuarios en todo el mundo.

¿Cómo contribuirás con tus capacidades al propósito del rol? 💼

Desarrollar investigación original en inteligencia artificial aplicada a redes de telecomunicaciones.

• Diseñar modelos de machine learning para optimización de redes, detección de anomalías y análisis de causa raíz.
• Trabajar con grandes volúmenes de datos de red (KPIs, señalización, comportamiento de usuarios).
• Desarrollar pipelines completos de datos: procesamiento, feature engineering, entrenamiento y evaluación de modelos.
• Investigar e integrar IA en arquitecturas de red (NFV, cloud-native, plataformas de gestión de red).
• Publicar resultados en conferencias y revistas científicas de alto nivel.
• Colaborar con equipos de ingeniería para transferir resultados de investigación a sistemas reales.
• Participar en proyectos europeos, consorcios internacionales y actividades de estandarización.
• Contribuir a patentes, white papers y difusión científica de la investigación.
