The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is a leading research center in high-performance computing (HPC) and a key node in the European supercomputing ecosystem. It houses MareNostrum, one of Europe's most powerful supercomputers, and conducts research across computer sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, and computational applications. BSC operates as a consortium of the Spanish government, the Catalan government, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and it plays a central role in international initiatives like the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC), with many employees working on EU-funded projects and collaborations with major tech companies.

BSC's main and only office is located on the campus of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, where the majority of its workforce are scientists, engineers, and support staff. The center actively recruits international researchers and engineers, with a high proportion of non-Spanish staff, and its working language is predominantly English. For global talent, BSC offers the chance to work at the forefront of HPC and AI research in a dynamic, international environment in one of Spain's most cosmopolitan cities.

Company History

BSC was founded in 2005 as a consortium, evolving from the earlier Center for Parallel Programming (CEPBA) that had been established in the 1990s. It was created to lead the Spanish participation in European supercomputing, and it hosts the Mare Invictus supercomputer. In the late 2010s and 2020s, BSC expanded into AI and became a key player in the EuroHPC network and the BSC's AI Factory.
