What we're looking for
We are currently accepting applications for the above mentioned position. This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated students recently graduated from the University in Physics or related fields to gain research experience in one of DIPC's high-profile research teams.
The successful candidate should have a solid background in quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, together with a strong interest in experimental physics and quantum technologies. Previous experience with numerical simulations or theoretical studies of quantum transport, superconducting systems, or low-temperature quantum phenomena will be considered an advantage. The project offers an opportunity to develop expertise across experimental and computational approaches to superconducting quantum technologies and quantum magnonics.
A solid background in quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, together with a strong interest in experimental physics and quantum technologies will be important, as well as good programming skills, particularly in Python, for instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and numerical simulations. Previous experience with numerical simulations or theoretical studies of quantum transport, superconducting systems, or low-temperature quantum phenomena will be considered an advantage.
The role
PhD Student - Investigation of superconducting qubits and hybrid magnonic devices by means of microwave spectroscopy and cQED (Open)
Pre-doctoral position
Position category: PhD Student
What you'll do
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join our research program on superconducting quantum circuits and hybrid quantum systems. The project is primarily experimental and will focus on the development of advanced microwave spectroscopy techniques for the investigation of superconducting circuits incorporating qubits, as well as hybrid circuits combining superconducting and magnetic elements for quantum magnonics.
The PhD student will develop and operate microwave measurement techniques at millikelvin temperatures, using a dilution refrigerator to characterize superconducting qubits, resonators, and hybrid superconducting-magnetic circuits. The work will involve the design and optimization of microwave spectroscopy experiments, data acquisition and analysis, and the development of experimental protocols to study quantum states and interactions in these systems. The project will provide hands-on experience with cryogenic systems, microwave electronics, superconducting devices, and quantum measurement techniques.
Alongside the experimental work, the project will include a theoretical and computational component aimed at modelling the investigated quantum systems and supporting the interpretation of experimental results. Numerical simulations will be used to study quantum transport, superconducting circuits, qubit-resonator interactions, and hybrid systems involving superconducting and magnetic elements. Good programming skills, particularly in Python, will therefore be important for instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and numerical simulations.
How you'll work
- Contract duration: 1 year (possibility to extend up to 2 years)
- Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
- Target start date: 2026/12/01
We provide a highly stimulating research environment, and unique professional career development opportunities.
We offer and promote a diverse and inclusive environment and welcomes applicants regardless of age, disability, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Selection process
Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee designed by the DIPC board on the basis of the following criteria:
- CV of the candidate (60%)
- Adequacy of the candidate's scientific background to the project (20%)
- Reference letters (10%)
- Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc. (10%)
Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.
The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position will be awarded to the candidate with the next highest score, provided it is above 50 (out of 100).
However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.
