Basque Centre for Climate Change, Leioa, Spain
The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is opening a competitive call for applications for one Early Career Researcher position within the Horizon Europe project EU-KAIROS ("Enhancing Knowledge for Understanding Cascading EU RISK for Informing Resilience"). The position is aimed at early-career researchers who have recently completed, or are about to complete, their doctoral thesis.
EU-KAIROS aims to inform and strengthen future European Union Climate Risk Assessments (EUCRAs) by addressing the knowledge and action gaps identified in the first European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA1). The project develops a systemic climate risk assessment framework that combines sectoral and soft-linked Water-Energy-Land/Food (NEXUS) models with exploratory approaches (forensics of realised risk, vulnerability, adaptation limits and tipping points), and applies it in case studies across the four EUCRA regions, co-developed with stakeholders through Learning Labs and Policy & Practice Labs. The consortium brings together 15 organisations from 9 European countries and is coordinated by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).
Within EU-KAIROS, BC3 contributes mainly to the work on risk ownership and governance of systemic climate risks, including the role of the private sector and finance in risk-taking and opportunity creation, risk layering across the EU and decision-making approaches such as the Triple Dividend of Resilience. BC3 also contributes to the analysis of intersectoral interdependencies, to the case-study work and to policy engagement. The selected person will apply quantitative and economic methods to these questions, working with climate-risk, impact and socio-economic data, and will contribute to the project case studies and deliverables. The research will be conducted at BC3 in close collaboration with the EU-KAIROS partners and will be supervised by Ibon Galarraga and Elisa Sainz de Murieta (BC3).
Starting on December 2026. The position will be for an initial period of 24 months, with the possibility of extension until the end of BC3's tasks in EU-KAIROS 31 January 2030, subject to a positive assessment of performance and to project funding.
