What we're looking for

  • PhD in sustainability science, environmental sciences, social sciences, geography, public health or related fields.
  • Experience in participatory, qualitative and/or transdisciplinary research.
  • Experience with community engagement and qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Strong research, writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Command of Spanish and English languages.

Nice to have

  • Experience with participatory workshops, focus groups or other co-creation methods.
  • Experience working on social and/or environmental challenges in European contexts.
  • Experience translating participatory research into scientific or policy-relevant outputs.

The role

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a part-time Postdoctoral Researcher position for two months, under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Franco.

The position will contribute to ongoing research on urban heat, climate-related health risks and social inequalities, using participatory approaches to understanding social and environmental challenges in European contexts, with a particular focus on the development and application of participatory research methods.

The researcher will contribute to the design, adaptation and implementation of participatory methodologies, including Photovoice, working with urban communities to explore lived experiences, perceptions and responses to heat in their everyday lives, and to identify opportunities for social, environmental and health-related change.

What you'll do

  • Develop and adapt participatory research approaches, including Photovoice and related qualitative methods.
  • Contribute to the design and preparation of participatory activities and research materials.
  • Support the facilitation of participatory workshops, group discussions and/or interviews.
  • Organise, process and analyse qualitative and visual research data.
  • Contribute to the interpretation of preliminary findings.
  • Support engagement with relevant stakeholders and community partners.
  • Collaborate in scientific outputs, including research papers, reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate closely with Dr. Manuel Franco and the wider research team.

How you'll work

This is a fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher position with an immediate start date. The contract is part-time, requiring a 17.5-hour work week (equivalent to 2.5 working days per week).
