The following experience will be considered an advantage:
We are seeking a highly motivated and outstanding Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Padilla-Parra Laboratory at Instituto Biofisika (IBF), working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, protein engineering and advanced neuroimaging. (Financial support received from the IKUR Strategy under the collaboration agreement between Ikerbasque Foundation and Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia on behalf of the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government).
The successful candidate will join an international and multidisciplinary team to design and develop next-generation red and far-red fluorescent proteins (FPs) using state-of-the-art AI-driven protein language models, with direct applications in deep-tissue imaging of the mammalian brain.
The project combines cutting-edge AI-based protein engineering with advanced two- and three-photon microscopy to address a major challenge in neurobiology: developing genetically encoded fluorescent probes with the optical and photophysical properties required for non-invasive imaging deep within brain tissue.
This fully funded, two-year postdoctoral position is supported by a multi-institutional collaboration and is expected to start in January 2027.
The successful candidate will be appointed through a two-year postdoctoral employment contract and will join Instituto Biofisika (IBF).
Red and far-red fluorescent proteins are essential tools for deep-tissue imaging. However, their current photophysical properties remain a limiting factor for two- and three-photon neuroimaging at depth.
This project will apply state-of-the-art protein language models, including ESM3 (Meta), ProteinMPNN, RFdiffusion, AlphaFold3 and EvoProtGrad, to computationally design novel red and far-red fluorescent protein variants with optimised brightness, photostability and two-photon absorption cross-sections for in vivo brain imaging.
The designed candidates will be synthesised, expressed in bacterial and mammalian systems, including primary neuronal cultures, purified and subjected to comprehensive biophysical and structural characterisation. Selected variants will subsequently be evaluated in intact brain tissue using advanced two- and three-photon microscopy.
The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Pamina Winkler (CIC biomaGUNE, San Sebastián), Dr. Nora Bengoa-Vergniory (Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, Bilbao) and Dr. Sharroll Bachas (CSO, Onava, San Francisco), a company specialising in AI-driven protein engineering. This collaboration provides an exceptional network of scientific and industrial expertise.

Instituto Biofisika (IBF) is a biophysics research centre operating in partnership with Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia (FBB). It is a joint research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and its research focuses on advancing knowledge about the physical and chemical processes underlying biology and disease. The institute carries out innovative biochemical and biophysical research in a research building with cutting-edge facilities located on the Leioa campus of the EHU, and is one of only two joint centres of CSIC and EHU and one of only nine Basque Excellence Research Centres (BERCs) accredited by the Basque Government.
The institute is located in Leioa, Bizkaia, in the Science Park of the UPV/EHU, near Bilbao in the northern Basque region of Spain. Its stated mission is to train new scientists and advance scientific knowledge under core values that include integrity, excellence, collaboration, transparency, community, diversity, inclusion, and innovation. It actively recruits for research roles — its current openings include laboratory assistant, research technician, and fully funded PhD positions, as well as positions on an ERC Advanced Grant project — making it relevant for international scientists seeking research careers in Spain.
Instituto Biofisika (IBF) is a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Together with Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia, a Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC), IBF provides an internationally recognised environment for interdisciplinary research in biophysics, structural biology and advanced imaging.
Located on the UPV/EHU campus near Bilbao, the institute hosts internationally competitive research groups and offers access to state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure.
The successful candidate will join the Padilla-Parra Laboratory at Instituto Biofisika, an internationally active research group specialising in quantitative fluorescence microscopy, the biophysical characterisation of proteins and lipid membranes in the context of virus entry, and the development of novel optical tools for cell biology and neuroscience.
The project brings together complementary expertise from leading research institutions and industry:
The candidate will benefit from an interdisciplinary research environment combining computational protein design, molecular biology, biophysics, advanced microscopy and neuroscience, with opportunities to establish international academic and industrial collaborations.
