Requirements

What we're looking for

  • Demonstrated advanced expertise in real-time VFX for games, supported by a strong portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of visual effects techniques for creating real-time VFX in a 3D game engine.
  • Strong knowledge of industry-standard game engines such as Unity, Unreal Engine, or CryEngine.
  • Solid understanding of game development and how VFX contribute to gameplay, visual feedback, and the overall player experience.
  • Experience creating particle systems and VFX in 3D packages such as Maya, Houdini, or 3ds Max.
  • Experience with VFX techniques and plugins for 3D software packages such as RayFire, Krakatoa, FumeFX, AfterBurn, or Maya Fluids.
  • Ability to establish priorities, manage workflows, and coordinate a VFX team while maintaining quality and delivery standards.
  • Ability to take initiative, provide creative input, and positively accept and apply feedback.
  • Willingness to work with in-house tools and contribute to the development and improvement of proprietary game technology.
  • Expertise in GLSL or HLSL would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience in mobile game development would be a plus.
  • Some experience with animation would also be a plus.
  • Fluent professional English, written and spoken, for collaboration in an international environment.
  • You are a creative and experienced VFX professional who can combine artistic vision with an understanding of production and technical requirements.
  • You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with different disciplines and stakeholders.
  • You are comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback and using it to improve both your own work and the team's output.
  • You can organise priorities, identify blockers, and proactively find solutions in a production environment.
  • You are interested in developing people, processes, and workflows alongside the quality of the VFX itself.

The role

We are looking for a Lead VFX Artist to lead the VFX discipline across our games, combining strong artistic expertise with team coordination, visual direction, and pipeline development. You will work closely with the Art Director and key stakeholders across the studio to ensure a consistent visual and technical quality across all VFX, while supporting project and studio goals.

You will oversee the VFX process from initial concepts and prototyping through implementation, iteration, optimisation, and final delivery. Working with our proprietary engine and in-house tools, you will also contribute to the evolution of our VFX workflows, standards, and technology.

After 3 months, you will have built a strong understanding of the studio's projects, VFX workflows, team structure, and production requirements. You will have established effective working relationships with the Art Director and key stakeholders across the studio.

After 6 months, you will be independently driving VFX priorities, supporting the team in delivering against project goals, and contributing to the evolution of VFX standards, workflows, and quality across the studio.

What you'll do

  • VFX Team Leadership: Oversee and coordinate the VFX team, establish priorities, and ensure deadlines and quality targets are met. Identify and remove systemic blockers early and proactively adjust resources and scope.
  • Visual Direction & Quality: Work with the Art Director to ensure visual and technical unity across all VFX. Review completed work against artistic, technical, and gameplay requirements and advance VFX quality through regular reviews.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Collaborate with Art Leads, Producers, Gameplay, Tech Art, Engineering, and other teams. Provide constructive feedback to internal and external partners.
  • VFX Pipeline: Oversee the entire VFX pipeline, from initial concept and prototyping through implementation, iteration, optimisation, and final delivery.
  • Standards & Workflows: Establish and maintain VFX standards, workflows, tools, and best practices. Ensure effects meet performance and platform requirements.
  • Team Development: Participate in recruitment, mentor VFX artists, and foster team growth and development.
