Job description

The Director of Intellectual Property and Startups will be the person responsible for designing and implementing strategies to develop and monetize technological assets with high impact potential, ensuring their transfer to the market through spin-offs, licensing, sale of industrial property, and strategic agreements with corporations and investors.

This role requires combining strategic vision, technical knowledge, negotiation skills, and a deep understanding of Deep Tech investment dynamics. In addition, they will play a key role in relationships with venture capital funds, corporate venture funds, institutional investors, and, in particular, with the investment fund in which the technology center itself holds a stake, ensuring effective alignment between investment interests and the center's technology valorization strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Venture building and technology transfer strategy:

Design business models and scalability strategies for technological assets that facilitate attracting investment and bringing them to market.

Relationship with the management company of the center's corporate investment fund:

Act as the strategic connection point between the technology center and the management company of the investment fund in which the organization holds a stake as a shareholder.

Ensure alignment between internal deal flow and the fund's investment thesis, facilitate due diligence processes, and coordinate co-investment mechanisms and portfolio monitoring.

Negotiation with investors and corporations:

Structure agreements with investment funds, venture capital, corporate venture, and large companies, maximizing the return for the R&D center.

Development of an investment ecosystem:

Connect with VCs specialized in Deep Tech, family offices, business angels, and public/private funds, ensuring access to financing at different stages.

Identification and incorporation of founding teams for startups:

Identify and develop entrepreneurial talent within Tecnalia, spotting researchers and professionals with the potential to take on key roles in the creation and management of new startups. Likewise, attract external entrepreneurs, CEOs, and management teams with experience in scaling Deep Tech startups, ensuring complementarity between the scientific-technological team and the business capabilities needed for the success of each spin-off.

Blended financing strategy: Combine grants, equity, private investment, and other mechanisms to strengthen technology maturation and facilitate its scaling.

Intellectual property and licensing:

Coordinate IP management strategies, ensuring the proper protection, valorization, and exploitation of technological assets.

Support for researchers and R&D teams:

Provide support in structuring business opportunities, facilitating their transition from the laboratory to the market.

Representation and strategic positioning:

Participate in innovation, investment, and technology transfer forums, raising the center's visibility in the global ecosystem.

Promotion of an entrepreneurial culture within the organization:

Drive initiatives that foster an entrepreneurial mindset within the technology center, motivating researchers and professionals to identify market opportunities and actively participate in venture building processes and the creation of new startups.
