Tecnalia

Tecnalia

Tecnalia is the largest applied research and technological development center in Spain, operating primarily in the Basque Country and focusing on areas such as advanced manufacturing, energy transition, smart cities, digital transformation, and quantum technologies. As a private, non-profit research association aligned with both Basque and European innovation priorities, it collaborates closely with industry to transfer knowledge and develop market-oriented solutions. With a workforce of around 1,500 professionals, it ranks among European leaders in research output and industrial technology.

For international professionals, Tecnalia offers a highly specialized, bilingual (Spanish/English) working environment across multiple hubs in Spain, with significant operations in the vibrant city of San Sebastián. Its ongoing expansion into frontier fields—like diamond-based quantum sensing, robotics, and smart automation—presents opportunities for researchers seeking to contribute at the highest technical levels. While its primary focus and regional roots are in the Basque region, the center's projects offer a globally relevant professional network and an attractive gateway for those looking to build a career in scientific innovation within Spain.

Company History

Tecnalia was formed in 2011 through the merger of several Basque technology centers seeking to consolidate regional expertise. It emerged as a major R&D division for the Basque Institute of Excellence, becoming a member of BRTA (Basque Research and Technology Alliance). As the largest applied research group in Spain, it has since expanded into 8 centers to serve across sectors like materials, energy, and digital, with a growing international portfolio.
