The role

The Pasqual Maragall Foundation was created in 2008 with the mission to promote and develop excellence in biomedical research. The Foundation is fully committed to being decisive in contributing global solutions to the problem of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, as well as raising social awareness to ensure that scientific support for these challenges achieves the appropriate priority. The Foundation's research is carried out at the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), a research center established with the participation of Pompeu Fabra University and the "la Caixa" Foundation.
The vision of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation is to achieve "A future without Alzheimer's," within the framework of active and healthy aging associated with positive experiences and free from cognitive problems and decline. To this end, BBRC research is directed towards the primary and secondary prevention of Alzheimer's disease, which is possible thanks to the participation of thousands of people who, voluntarily, contribute to scientific studies with the goal that, in the near future, there will be many fewer people ill.
The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is a private non-profit entity. Its economic resources come from philanthropic donations from entities and companies, as well as an extensive network of more than 100,000 members who contribute to financing research. The research center's scientific staff also competitively obtains grants and subsidies, mainly from European funds and international foundations.

The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is a young, consolidated, and growing foundation that, together with the BBRC, currently totals more than 350 people. The scientific team is made up of research staff and professionals from the areas of medicine, biology, psychology, and nursing, among others. It also has transversal areas of maintenance, IT, finance, purchasing, human resources, communication, and fundraising. All together in a dynamic environment, in which continuous challenges form part of the Foundation's scope of work.

What you'll do

Position Description
The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is looking for a university student to join as an intern in the Neurological Disease Models Research Group at the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC). The group uses advanced cellular models, such as organoids and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the progression of neurodegeneration, especially in Alzheimer's disease. The objective of the internship will be to provide bioinformatics support for the organization, processing, analysis, and interpretation of data generated in these models, contributing to the development of reproducible analyses that help characterize biomarkers, molecular processes, and factors associated with disease progression. The person will work in close collaboration with the research and laboratory team, providing a computational perspective to the group's projects.

Main Tasks
The student will be able to participate in the following group activities:

  • Support in the processing, quality control, and analysis of biomedical data generated from cellular models and iPSC-derived organoids.
  • Development and adaptation of scripts and pipelines in Python and/or R for data cleaning, transformation, analysis, and visualization.
  • Performing exploratory and statistical analyses of molecular data derived from omics data.
  • Support in the integration of experimental data with genetic, biological, or clinical information available in the group's projects.
  • Consultation of biological databases and support in the annotation and functional interpretation of genes, pathways, and molecular processes related to neurodegeneration.
  • Documentation of analysis processes and contribution to reproducible working environments using notebooks, version control, and good data management practices.
  • Collaboration with the group's research, technical, and data analysis staff in the interpretation of results and the preparation of figures, tables, and technical summaries.

Personal skills

  • Analytical capacity and critical thinking.
  • Interest in biomedical research and data analysis.
  • Ability to work in a team in an interdisciplinary environment between experimental and computational profiles.
  • Proactivity, progressive autonomy, and capacity for learning.
  • Methodological rigor, organizational capacity, and orientation towards the quality and reproducibility of analyses.

Position characteristics

  • Possibility of establishing a university agreement.
  • Location: Pasqual Maragall Foundation / Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center, within the Pompeu Fabra University campus (c/ Wellington, 30). Metro L4 / Tram T4.
  • Start date: to be determined.
  • Internship duration: to be determined according to the university agreement.
  • Schedule and working day: to be determined, seeking compatibility with studies and the needs of the group.

About BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Center

The Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC) is the research center of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, dedicated to the prevention of Alzheimer's disease and the study of cognitive functions in healthy and pathological aging. Since its founding in 2012, the center has focused on the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's, using the ALFA study cohort of nearly 3,000 cognitively healthy individuals aged 45-75, mostly first-degree descendants of Alzheimer's patients, to identify biomarkers and develop early detection and prevention programs. The BBRC also operates advanced facilities including a 3T MRI, a fluid biomarker laboratory, and clinical trial spaces, and participates in international research consortia.

Located in Barcelona, Spain, the BBRC shares a campus with the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in the Ciutadella area, near the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), which hosts over 1,700 researchers from 60 countries. The center holds the European Commission's HRS4R recognition for excellence in human resources for research, reflecting its commitment to supporting scientific talent. For international professionals, the BBRC offers opportunities in neuroscience research, clinical trials, and biomarker development, with a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.
