At RDT, we are building a new strategic capability to transform technology, know-how, and IP into products, industrial pilots, and future business lines.

To strengthen Bilbao's technology hub, we are looking for a Firmware and Embedded Processing Engineer for Optical Interrogators to join the Strategic Projects team and work directly with the CTO in early technology development phases, from laboratory testing to functional prototypes and early validation.

This role is key to turning optical and optoelectronic architectures into controllable, parameterizable, repeatable, and transferable systems. We are not looking for an application software, dashboard, or backend profile: we are looking for someone close to hardware, capable of low-level programming, understanding timing constraints, configuring devices, working with fast signals, and collaborating with photonics, optoelectronics, FPGA/DSP, and signal processing profiles.

Your contribution sits in Bilbao, within the TRL 0-5 range: the core layer that connects the physical architecture of the interrogator with proprietary firmware, synchronized acquisition, operating modes, self-diagnostics, initial embedded processing, and documentation transferable to product, industrial pilots, and later industrialization.

What you'll do

· Develop embedded firmware for controlling optoelectronic modules, signal acquisition, synchronization, and operation of optical interrogators.

· Implement drivers, HAL, and peripheral control: ADC/DAC, GPIOs, timers, triggers, buses, interrupts, buffers, and DMA.

· Integrate firmware with FPGA, DSP, SoC, and high-speed acquisition platforms.

· Configure acquisition pipelines: sampling, buffers, triggers, timestamping, data transfer, and loss management.

· Collaborate on DSP blocks close to hardware: filtering, FFT, demodulation, correlation, phase/frequency extraction, noise reduction, and intermediate signal generation.

· Develop control logic for measurement modes, startup, calibration, self-diagnostics, state management, and fault recovery.

· Parameterize system operation to reduce manual laboratory adjustments and turn experimental setups into reproducible, documented modes.

· Participate in validating optoelectronic prototypes, debugging firmware and signals with oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG, UARTs, DAQs, and laboratory instrumentation.

· Document firmware architecture, interfaces, algorithms, validation procedures, and technical know-how with IP potential or transfer to product.

What we are looking for

· Education in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Applied Physics, or similar.

· 3 to 6 years of experience in firmware, embedded systems, digital electronics, instrumentation, or signal acquisition.

· Hands-on proficiency in embedded programming, ideally C/C++ or equivalent low-level languages.

· Experience with drivers, peripherals, buses, interrupts, buffers, timers, DMA, and synchronization.

· Knowledge of microcontrollers, DSPs, SoCs, FPGAs, or embedded processing platforms.

· Ability to read schematics, interpret datasheets, and work close to electronics and optoelectronics.

· Practical knowledge of DSP: filtering, FFT, demodulation, correlation, feature extraction, and noise reduction.

· Autonomy, technical judgment, engineering rigor, and responsibility for deliverables.

· Ability to work in technically uncertain environments, formulate hypotheses, iterate solutions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
