BCMaterials is looking for a post-doctoral researcher to help develop the proof of principle perovskite spiking neural networks (SNNs) within SHIFT (Shape-shifting robots with Hybrid Intelligence for Flexible acTuation), a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (Grant Agreement No. 101343611) with a finishing date 30/11/2030.
SHIFT is developing modular, shape-changing robots in which local SNNs process tactile signals and trigger fast reflexes, with BCMaterials leading the perovskite work in close collaboration with the neuromorphic team at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). The candidate will develop a fundamentally new technology based on controlling ion migration within the perovskite family of semiconductors and exploiting their influence on charge recombination processes at the devices' interfaces to achieve self-learning in the network.
BCMaterials, the Basque Center on Materials, Applications and Nanostructures, is an autonomous materials research center launched in June 2012 by Ikerbasque and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is part of the BERC (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network and counts 131 researchers (105 staff researchers plus 26 associates), with 241 Scopus indexed publications in 2025 and around 5,800,000 € in funding, 99% of it competitive.
The center generates knowledge on the new generation of smart, active and multifunctional materials and turns it into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society. Its strategic areas cover environmental prevention, remediation and monitoring; energy generation and storage; digitalization and emerging technologies such as sensors and actuators for the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0; and biomedicine and biotechnology, including nanoparticle-based solutions and organ-on-a-chip approaches.
