The role

BCMaterials is looking for a motivated pre-doctoral researcher to work in the area of magnetocaloric materials (MCM), advanced manufacturing, and energy harvesting and solid-state refrigeration applications.

The aim of this project is to design and manufacture novel MCM via computational screening and experimental validation of intermetallic functionally graded magnetic materials with phase transformation around room temperature. This approach involves:
i) Design 4 MCMs with large adiabatic temperature change, predicting properties via computational calculations.
ii) Synthesize 2-3 MCMs with functional gradients, including NiMn(Ga,Sn,In, Ti) and La(FeSi)13.
iii) Characterize crystal structures, physical properties, and adiabatic temperature change and magnetic entropy change.

The present position is offered within the MAGCOOLEST project "PID2025-174502NB-C33. MAGCOOLEST" with a finishing date on 31/08/2029.

About BCMaterials

BCMaterials, the Basque Center on Materials, Applications and Nanostructures, is an autonomous materials research center launched in June 2012 by Ikerbasque and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is part of the BERC (Basque Excellence Research Centers) network and counts 131 researchers (105 staff researchers plus 26 associates), with 241 Scopus indexed publications in 2025 and around 5,800,000 € in funding, 99% of it competitive.

The center generates knowledge on the new generation of smart, active and multifunctional materials and turns it into (multi)functional solutions and devices for the benefit of society. Its strategic areas cover environmental prevention, remediation and monitoring; energy generation and storage; digitalization and emerging technologies such as sensors and actuators for the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0; and biomedicine and biotechnology, including nanoparticle-based solutions and organ-on-a-chip approaches.
