At RDT, we are building a new strategic capability to transform technology, know-how, and IP into products, industrial pilots, and future business lines.

To strengthen the Bilbao technology hub, we are looking for a Senior Engineer in Optoelectronics and Physical Signal Processing to join the Strategic Projects team and work directly with the CTO in early stages of technology development, from TRL 0 to TRL 5.

The challenge is not just designing electronics or optics: it is turning physical principles, laboratory configurations, and optical interrogation architectures into measurable, repeatable, documented, and transferable systems toward functional prototypes, industrial pilots, and subsequent industrialization.

This role is strategic because it reduces one of the technology's critical risks: ensuring the entire chain —laser, optics, delays, photodetection, acquisition electronics, FPGA/DSP, and physical signal processing— is technically sound, defensible as know-how/IP, and ready to evolve into a product, license, or technology platform.

What you'll do

· Design and adapt optical interrogation architectures for photonic sensing solutions, fiber optics, distributed sensors, FBG, and interferometry.

· Define the complete measurement chain: optical source, components, delays, photodetection, acquisition, FPGA/DSP, and signal extraction.

· Evaluate trade-offs between sensitivity, resolution, bandwidth, range, stability, cost, robustness, and industrialization.

· Select, specify, and validate optical sources and lasers based on coherence, stability, power, noise, and compatibility with the architecture.

· Design and evaluate optical delays, interferometry, filtering, references, and physical signal conditioning before digitization.

· Define photodetection requirements, acquisition electronics, ADC/DAC, synchronization, triggers, interfaces, and data architecture.

· Collaborate on FPGA/firmware and DSP blocks for acquisition, filtering, demodulation, correlation, phase/frequency extraction, and noise reduction.

· Build signal and noise budgets, identifying optical, electronic, thermal, RIN, jitter, quantization, drift, and interference limitations.

· Design optoelectronic test benches, test plans, acceptance criteria, calibration, and documentation for early TRL 0-5 validation.

· Generate transferable documentation toward product: architecture, interfaces, technical limits, preliminary BoM, risks, tests, scaling constraints, and IP opportunities.

What we are looking for

· Degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, Photonics, Optics, Industrial Engineering, or similar.

· Senior experience in design, integration, or validation of optoelectronic systems, advanced instrumentation, optical interrogators, or laser systems.

· Solid knowledge of optical sensing, fiber optics, FBG, distributed sensors, and optical interrogation.

· Experience in photodetection, signal conditioning, digitization, synchronization, and electronics applied to instrumentation.

· Ability to analyze physical signals and translate noise, stability, resolution, sensitivity, and measurement limits into design decisions.

· Ability to convert laboratory developments into documented, repeatable, and transferable architectures toward prototype, product, or industrialization.

· Autonomy, technical judgment, engineering rigor, and responsibility for deliverables in contexts of technological uncertainty.

· Clear communication to connect physical phenomena, optoelectronic design, digital processing, product, customer, industrialization, and business.

Will be valued

· Experience in DAS, DTS, DTSS, DFOS, Rayleigh, Brillouin, Raman, Faraday, OCT, LiDAR, or fiber-based measurement systems.

· Experience in coherent detection, optical modulation, polarization control, phase/frequency stabilization, or distributed synchronization.
