About the role

At RDT, we are building a new strategic capability to transform technology, know-how, and IP into products, industrial pilots, and future business lines.

To strengthen the Bilbao technology hub, we are looking for a Junior Photonics and Optical Sensing Engineer to join the Strategic Projects team and work directly with the CTO in the early stages of technology development, from proof of concept to functional prototypes and laboratory validation.

The role combines applied photonics, optical sensing, and optoelectronics associated with interrogation systems. We are looking for someone with a solid technical foundation, experimental curiosity, laboratory rigor, and a drive to turn technology into measurable, repeatable, and transferable solutions for product development.

What you'll do

· Participate in the design, assembly, and validation of solutions based on optical sensing and fiber optics.

· Work with technologies such as FBG, interferometry, DAS, DTS, Brillouin, Raman, Rayleigh, Faraday, and other optical sensing architectures.

· Prepare and improve optical laboratory setups, test benches, and functional prototypes.

· Collaborate on the integration and validation of optical sources, lasers, photodetectors, couplers, circulators, filters, drivers, and acquisition modules.

· Evaluate sensitivity, noise, stability, repeatability, calibration, and detection limits of optical signals.

· Analyze experimental data and signals using tools such as Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent.

· Document configurations, tests, results, technical learnings, and potential know-how or IP elements.

What we are looking for

· Degree in Physics, Physical Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, Photonics, Optics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

· Knowledge of fiber optics, photonics, applied optoelectronics, and sensor physics.

· Familiarity with optical laboratories, instrumentation, setup assembly, and experimental validation.

· Foundation in data analysis, signal processing, or numerical modeling.

· Basic proficiency in Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent tools.

· Practical mindset, technological curiosity, experimental rigor, and the ability to work in technically uncertain environments.

Will be valued

· Experience or knowledge of DAS, DTS, DTSS, Brillouin, Raman, Rayleigh, Faraday, or distributed sensors.

· Experience with commercial or experimental optical interrogators.

· Knowledge of analog electronics, instrumentation, FPGA/DSP, firmware, or embedded systems.

· Experience with optical benches, fiber splicing, connectors, alignment, laser safety, metrology, or calibration.

· Interest in advancing technology from the laboratory to pilot, product, or industrial solutions.

Why join us

· You will join at an early stage a new strategic capability within R&D&I.

· You will work directly with the CTO on technologies with high industrial potential.

· You will participate in the development of proprietary solutions that may lead to products, industrial pilots, patents, or new business lines.

· This is not a conventional engineering role: it combines laboratory work, deep technology, prototyping, IP, and a focus on industrial impact.
