VP of Design

• Have 10+ years in design and design engineering; 6+ years leading product design with real impact and high-responsibility flows

• Have a portfolio with evidence of extremely high taste/craft + measurable results (conversion, retention, NPS), not just aesthetics

• Are a Builder: demonstrable ability to design and program (code prototypes and/or production UI). Comfortable with React/Next/TypeScript or equivalent, Git, and PRs

• Have experience building and scaling design systems with governance, Figma↔code parity, tokens, and reusable components

• Have experience designing AI UX/agentic workflows: permissions, progress, failures, recovery, human review, explainability, and guardrails

• Have the ability to design and institutionalize evaluation: scenario libraries, quality rubrics, regression tests, and release criteria

• Are oriented toward metrics and data: funnels, instrumentation, experimentation, reading tickets/logs, and evidence-based decisions

• Are obsessed with detail: a11y (WCAG), performance, trust-building microcopy, edge cases; zero tolerance for "almost"

• Provide clear and demanding leadership: recruit bar-raisers, give sharp feedback, and influence stakeholders with clarity

• Possess high agency, infinite curiosity, and a focus on execution: you turn ambiguity into shipped product.

• Fintech / insurtech / regulated UX (compliance, reputational risk, privacy) - design in regulated environments, focusing on compliance, reputational risk, and privacy; trust design in sensitive domains

As VP of Design, you will lead the end‑to‑end design of "magically done‑for‑you" experiences that eliminate friction in taxes, grants, and any procedure.

• You will be the founder of your solutions, co‑leading an AI‑first team with radical ownership and launching simple, accessible, and scalable flows in days that restore peace of mind to millions of people

• You will be responsible for turning design into a measurable competitive advantage: conversion to payment, trust, and operational efficiency (especially during tax season, with load peaks and reputational risk)

• You will lead the Design function by connecting it with Product, Engineering, Data, AI, and Operations

• Your focus is not "making screens": it is designing systems, decisions, quality, and model behavior in an end-to-end product (AI + experts)

• This role is player-coach: in addition to leading, you will design and build critical pieces in code (flows, components, motion, microcopy, states) to a top level

• You will have the autonomy to redesign the team, standards, and rituals, and turn the TaxDown Design System into an executable platform (tokens + components in code + constraints + evals)

• You will report to the CEO/CPO & CoFounder, with direct access for brand decisions, investment, and storytelling"

• Define the AI experience strategy for tax returns (E2E) with quarterly goals for conversion, experience, trust, and efficiency. Returns that do themselves! Full Self Tax

• Master the "moment of truth" of conversion to payment, optimizing without dark patterns: clarity of value, minimal friction, and total transparency

• Re-scope "design" to include model behavior: permissions, scaling rules, progress, limits, refusals/safe-completion, recovery, and handoff to an expert

• Design agentic workflows (beyond chat): autonomy with control (review/commit, diffs, undo/redo), evidence, and traceability

• Prototype in code (React/Next/TS) and use design→code tools (Figma Make/Dev Mode, MCP, v0, Cursor, etc.) to reduce the idea→prototype→production cycle

• Harden the craft in production: typography, motion, micro-interactions, content, and states (empty/error); a11y and performance as a standard

• Build and govern the TaxDown Design System as an executable platform: tokens, components in code, constraints, golden paths, anti-patterns, versioning, and rollback

• Create and lead a "Design Builder Platform" within Design: design-to-code pipeline, templates/scaffolds, prototyping infra, enablement, and internal guardrails

• Institutionalize UX + model evaluation: scenario library, behavior acceptance tests, regression harness, and instrumentation to avoid drift

• Design trust & compliance UX: transparency (what we know/what we don't), sources/evidence, uncertainty, privacy, permissions, logs/audit, and IP/provenance where applicable

• Prepare and operate the tax season campaign: resilience under peaks, elegant degradation, incident playbooks, and collaboration with Ops/Support

• Develop leaders: demanding hiring, coaching, calibration, feedback, and succession; raise the bar of craft and execution across the entire org. A culture of excellence without ego.
