The role

Would you like to join a leading, innovative organization strongly committed to research and providing value to society?

AZTI's purpose is to drive positive change for the future of people, contributing to a healthy, sustainable, and integral society. And you can be part of this challenge.

From the Biotechnology and Molecular Ecology (BEM) team, we are looking for a person to carry out a Doctoral Thesis at AZTI on "Genomic prediction of resilience and adaptation to climate change to inform fisheries management.

The selected candidate will apply to the IKERTALENT 2026 - Training grants for research and technological personnel in the scientific-technological and business field of the agricultural, fisheries, and food sector. In this case, it is a grant program for researchers in training (PhD) with a duration of 4 years.

Thesis title: Genomic prediction of resilience and adaptation to climate change to inform fisheries management

Project tutors at AZTI: Alice Manuzzi, Natalia Diaz-Arce, Guillem Chust.

Center: AZTI Sukarrieta; (Pasaia headquarters to be assessed).

This project's objective is to develop tools based on genomics and epigenomics to predict the resilience and adaptive capacity of fishery species in the face of climate change.

To this end, adaptation mechanisms will be analyzed through the integration of extensive genomic and epigenomic datasets (WGS, RAD-seq, SNP arrays, and RRBS) in an interdisciplinary approach that combines genetics, modeling, and ecological knowledge. Likewise, environmental variables will be integrated to develop predictive models that allow for the estimation of future changes in the abundance, distribution, and adaptive capacity of species.

The project aligns with the thematic areas prioritized by the Vice-Ministry and with the objectives and guidelines of PEGA and PCTI 2030, by generating knowledge and applied tools for more sustainable, resilient, and innovative fisheries management in a context of global change.

The project is developed within the context of GenREACT, a multidisciplinary initiative focused on the integration of genomic, epigenomic, and environmental data to improve the assessment of marine populations and their response to climate change.

The selected person will be integrated into the framework of the GenREACT project, in a multidisciplinary environment that combines genomics, ecology, modeling, and fisheries management.

Hiring process

The formal application for the scholarship will be made through the Basque Government call: IKERTALENT 2026

Although the formal application is through the Basque Government, we encourage you to provide us with your CV and any questions or doubts you may have, so that we can assess your candidacy and guide you through the registration for the call itself.
