ENERGY TECHNICIAN (Humanitarian Action)

Acciona.org is the corporate foundation of the Spanish company ACCIONA which, under the motto The Energy & Water Foundation, has the mission of carrying out development cooperation by promoting access to energy, water, and infrastructure for people and communities without access to these services or struggling to pay for them.

We are looking for two people to join the execution of an innovation project in the field of access to energy in humanitarian contexts.

The project, carried out in alliance with an internationally recognized humanitarian NGO, aims to help improve the capacity of humanitarian organizations to meet electricity needs in emergency contexts using renewable energy sources. A tool will be developed to help humanitarian actors size their energy demand and identify sustainable solutions to meet it, and it will be validated in an intervention in the Philippines.

The Energy Technicians in humanitarian projects will join the project team to support the identification of existing solutions and applicable regulations and subsequently carry it out, specifically performing the following functions:

• Research on solutions developed in other sectors and/or regions that enable the characterization of demand and simulation of generation alternatives
• Study of methods and tools for sizing electrical power generation sources and simulating operating scenarios
• Study of the energy demand of humanitarian actors in emergency contexts.
• Study of the regulations applicable to energy access solutions in humanitarian emergencies
• Evaluation of different electrification and heating/cooking technologies. Search for suppliers of off-grid electricity access solutions. Analysis of the suitability of different solutions and evaluation based on regulations and corresponding certifications.
• Literature review on energy access in vulnerable and humanitarian contexts and identification of good practices, trends, and key impact factors.
• Preparation of manuals, good practices, guides, recommendations, and procedures.
• Support in the management and monitoring of the project, in accordance with the requirements established by acciona.org and external funding sources.

• English (full professional proficiency; equivalent to C1 level of the CEFR)
• Spanish.

• Contract duration of 12-24 months (with the possibility of continuing within the company)

What do we offer?

• Two positions: one focused on identifying solutions and further research, and another focused on evaluating said technical solutions and coordinating the project with everything related to execution.

What profile are we looking for?

University degree, Master's degree, or equivalent in Industrial Engineering, Energy Engineering, or other technical training. Currently pursuing a PhD or collaborating on a research grant (or having motivation for this type of position) will be highly valued.

At least 2 years of experience performing tasks related to at least one of the following areas:

• Research and study of the state of the art of energy access solutions in vulnerable contexts, emergencies, or humanitarian action.
• Innovation in the humanitarian sector or in universal access to energy
• Preparation of demand studies or design of off-grid energy access solutions

Competency profile:

• Motivation for specialized social work.
• Interest in the field of research and study in highly specialized topics
• Interest in universal access to energy
• High degree of autonomy
• Ability to interact with formal and informal structures. Flexibility.
• Computer skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project)
• Good ability to gather requirements, needs, and collect feedback.

Additionally, the following will be valued:

• Having completed or being in the process of completing a PhD thesis on energy access in vulnerable contexts.
• Training in project management
• Having completed volunteer work of a technical nature or in humanitarian aid
• Additional specific training in energy technologies and service provision models.
• Additional training in development cooperation.

Acciona.org es la fundación corporativa de la compañía española ACCIONA que, bajo el lema The Energy & Water Foundation, tiene la misión de hacer cooperación al desarrollo mediante el fomento del acceso a la energía, al agua, y a las infraestructuras de las personas y comunidades sin expectativa de cobertura de dichas necesidades o con dificultad para afrontar el pago de estos servicios.

Buscamos dos personas que se incorporen para la ejecución de un proyecto de innovación en el ámbito de acceso a energía en contextos humanitarios.

El proyecto, ejecutado en alianza con una ONGD del sector humanitario internacionalmente reconocida, tiene como objetivo contribuir a mejorar la capacidad de organizaciones humanitarias para satisfacer las necesidades de electricidad en contextos de emergencia utilizando fuentes de energía renovables. Se desarrollará una herramienta que permita a los actores humanitarios dimensionar su demanda energética e identificar soluciones sostenibles para satisfacerla y que se validará en una intervención en Filipinas.

Los Técnicos de energía en proyectos humanitarios se incorporarán al equipo de proyecto para apoyar en la identificación de soluciones preexistentes y normativa de aplicación y posteriormente llevarlo a cabo y, en concreto, desempeñar las siguientes funciones:

• Investigar acerca de soluciones desarrolladas en otros sectores y/o regiones que permitan la caracterización de demanda y simulación de alternativas de generación
• Estudio de métodos y herramientas para el dimensionamiento de fuentes de generación de energía eléctrica y simulación de escenarios de operación
• Estudio de la demanda energética de los actores humanitarios en contextos de emergencia.
• Estudio de la normativa de aplicación para soluciones de acceso a energía en emergencias de acción humanitaria
• Evaluación de diferentes tecnologías de electrificación y de calentamiento/cocinado. Búsqueda de proveedores de soluciones de acceso a electricidad sin conexión a la red existentes. Análisis de adecuación de diferentes soluciones y evaluación en función de normativa y certificaciones correspondientes.
• Revisión bibliográfica acerca del acceso a energía en contextos vulnerables y humanitarios e identificación de buenas prácticas, tendencias y factores clave de impacto.
• Elaboración de manuales, buenas prácticas, guías, recomendaciones y procedimientos.
• Apoyar en la gestión y seguimiento del proyecto, de acuerdo a los requisitos establecidos por acciona.org y por fuentes de financiación externas.

• inglés (competencia profesional completa; equivalente a Nivel C1 del MCER)
• español.

• Dos posiciones : una de identificación de soluciones y un trabajo mas de investigación y otra de evaluación técnica de dichas soluciones y coordinación en proyecto con todo lo relacionado con ejecución.

¿Qué perfil estamos buscando?

Titulación Superior, Máster o equivalente en Ingeniería Industrial, Energética u otra formación técnica. Muy valorable estar realizando un Doctorado o colaborando en alguna beca de investigación (o tener motivación por este tipo de puestos).

Al menos 2 años desarrollando labores relacionadas con, al menos, una de las siguientes áreas:

• Investigación y estudio del estado del arte de soluciones de acceso a energía en contextos vulnerables, emergencias o acción humanitaria.
• Innovación en el sector humanitario o en el acceso universal a la energía
• Elaboración de estudios de demanda energética o diseño de soluciones aisladas de acceso a energía

Perfil competencial:

• Motivación para el trabajo social especializado.
• Interés por el ámbito de la investigación y el estudio en temáticas de alta especialización
• Interés por el acceso universal a la energía
• Alto grado de autonomía
• Capacidad de relación con estructuras formales e informales. Flexibilidad.
• Conocimiento de informática: MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project)
• Buena capacidad de toma de requerimientos, necesidades y recogida de feedback.

Adicionalmente, se valorará:

• Haber realizado o estar realizando una Tesis Doctoral en acceso a energía en contextos vulnerables.
• Formación en gestión de proyectos
• Haber realizado voluntariados de índole técnica o ayuda humanitaria
• Formación complementaria específica en tecnologías energéticas y modelos de provisión de servicios básicos.
• Formación complementaria en cooperación para el desarrollo.
