The role
Company Description
We are creating an innovative electric battery designed to significantly enhance the integration of renewables necessary for reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. Silbat's battery utilises the fusion latent heat of silicon, functioning as a melting silicon battery. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, which rely on rare materials sourced from a limited number of countries-leading to supply chain challenges, environmental degradation, and potential human rights violations-silicon is abundantly available. It ranks as the second most plentiful element in the Earth's crust and coincidentally holds the second highest fusion latent heat in the periodic table. This makes it a cost-effective option for Long Duration Energy Storage (approximately 100 hours), enabling energy-related capital expenditures below $20/kWh. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this cost target is critical for electricity storage to effectively integrate with solar and wind power, allowing for fully dispatchable electricity generation around the clock-fulfilling the long-held vision of a 100% renewable energy future.
Position
Vacancy Description: Researcher in Silicon Phase Change Studies and Containment Means
At Silbat, we are committed to advancing our understanding of silicon's phase change, with a specific focus on melting and freezing cycles when contained in refractory crucibles (graphite and SiC). Our research encompasses a wide array of methodologies, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, the development of digital twins, and thorough experimental testing in furnaces ranging from commercial to custom made, complemented by an extensive characterisation of results using various techniques.
We are seeking a dedicated researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will actively engage in this innovative research both on-site at Silbat and in collaboration with our partner research centres and suppliers. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge studies and drive advancements in the field.
